Background

Police Reform

Black Lives Matter (BLM)

Why The Interest?

In the last few years, protests against racial discrimination and police brutality against BIPOC (black and indigenous people of color) communities have become common. Groups like Black Lives Matter have called on federal, state, and local governments to reform police departments. Reform proposals have ranged from calls for increased transparency, increased oversight of police departments by civilians, illegalization of some police tactics, ending some legal protections afforded to police officers (qualified immunity), redistribution of police funding to other uses, and even to abolition of police departments.
