CSD 130: Introduction to Communication Sciences and Disorders

Fogler Library & CSD 130

Welcome to Fogler Library! This guide will help you get started. Below you'll find suggested databases for CSD topics and tutorials for using them. But don't hesitate to reach out to Nancy Lewis if you have any questions!

Don't forget to explore the other tabs in this guide for more tips on searching in the databases and using APA.

LibrarySearch

You can search for both books and articles in LibrarySearch, and there are filters, such as peer review for articles, that you can use. Once you've entered a search, sign in with your maine.edu credentials for the most access to full text.

Take a look at our LibrarySearch tutorial to get acquainted with this new system!

Find Articles: Recommended Databases

There are a number of places to search for peer-reviewed journal articles, and your topic will influence what tool you use.  While you can use the filter for peer reviewed articles in LibrarySearch, there can be benefits to use tailored library databases, which group articles in similar fields. Here are five library databases that might be helpful.  In each, you have the option to choose Advanced Search, which allows you to combine topics in your search (i.e. communication disorders AND multicultural populations)

How to do Database Searches

This tutorial will show you how to search for items using the library databases to search for journal articles.

Getting Access to Full Text

Many articles will be available with files you can download. In LibrarySearch you need to sign in with your MaineStreet login and password.

In the databases, you will need to click a link that says "Find It" to access the full text. This process will check Fogler Library's subscriptions for access to the article.

If we do not have access, you can then use our free Interlibrary Loan service to request the article.  Generally, you will see a link that will take you to the ILLiad service.

The first time you use the ILLiad service you will need to create your free account.  It generally takes one business day to receive the article.

Searching Google

Use Google to search websites you trust; using the site command can be helpful:

  •  site:URL search term

Example:

  • site:asha.org speech sound disorder

Using this example, all your results will be from ASHA's website.

Some possible helpful websites to try this with:

  • asha.org
  • cdc.gov
  • nidcd.nih.gov

If when searching the open Web, you find a scholarly article you can't read, download the URSUS Proxy Bookmarklet to use to see if Fogler has access to the article.
