LibrarySearch

You can search for both books and articles in LibrarySearch, and there are filters, such as Books, that you can use. Once you've entered a search, sign in with your maine.edu credentials for the most access to full text.

Take a look at our LibrarySearch tutorial to get acquainted with this new system!

Scholarly Sources

Scholarly sources are those which:

  • 1) are written by scholars
  • 2) vetted in some way for accuracy
  • 3) introduce new concepts, or new ways of thinking about existing concepts.

For books, here are some guidelines:

  • Is the book published by a university press, i.e. University of Maine Press? If so, it likely meets the requirement. Some other publishers are also scholarly; you can Google the publisher's name to get a sense of what they publish.

  • What are the credentials of the author (Google them if info is not provided)?  Is the book written, or edited, by impartial scholars?  (Note: books written by journalists, or politicians, for example, might not be scholarly)

  • Does the book contain citations to references, both within the text, and in a bibliography or reference list?
