Tools for Locating Scholarly Information

Citation Chaining

Citation chaining refers to the process of following scholarship on a particular topic by following cited references.

When a peer reviewed journal article is published, it will include a reference list of all scholarly work that the authors cited.  This reference list allows us, as readers, to find this older work.

But there are also ways to find work that is published after the article we are looking at was published; that is, finding which scholars built upon the work we are reading.  Thus the chain - past, present, and future.

Citation Help

In many databases, you can find a way to copy and paste the citation for your reference list.  However, it is important to be familiar with the correct format, as these services are not always correct.

For this course, you will be using the American Psychological Association 7th edition citation style (APA 7th):

Example:

Lustick, I. S., & Samuel, M. T. (2024). Israel, annexation, and sovereignty: Within the Green Line and across it. International Journal of Middle East Studies, 56(3), 361-378. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0020743824000758

NOTE: - When copying the APA 7th formatted citation from the Worldwide Political Science Abstracts database for this source, the title of the article had to be fixed.

You will also be learning about Citation Managers.  Remember, that no citation manager always makes the citation 100% correctly, so you will need to double check each citation.
