Troubleshooting Access to Online Resources: Desktop

The first line of defense in trouble-shooting access to online resources is to clear your web browser cache, cookies, and history.

Desktop IconsThe steps to clear the cache, cookies, and browsing history may differ depending on the version of your web browser. Scroll down to find your browser. If the solution offered here does not work, do a web search for "clearing cookies" followed by the name of your browser. All information current as of 05/12/2015.

Chrome Icon

 

Chrome

  1. Enter chrome://settings/clearBrowserData in your browser address bar
  2. From the “Obliterate the following items drop down menu, select the period of time for which you wish to clear cached information
  3. In the Clear Browsing Data panel, select:
    • Browsing history
    • Download history
    • Cookies and other site and plug-in data
    • Cached images and files
  4. Click Clear browsing data
  5. Exit all browser windows and re-open the browser

Firefox

  1. Click the Menu icon
  2. Select History
  3. Select Clear Recent History
  4. From the Time range to clear dropdown menu, select the period of time for which you wish to clear cached information
  5. Check off:
    • Browsing & Download History
    • Cookies
    • Cache
  6. Click Clear now
  7. Exit all browser windows and re-open the browser

Internet Explorer icon

 

Internet Explorer

  1. Click the settings icon
  2. Select Safety > Delete Browsing History 
  3. Check off:
    • Temporary Internet files and website files (equivalent to cache)
    • Cookies and Website Data
    • History
  4. Click Delete
  5. Exit all browser windows and re-open the browser

Opera v. 29

  1. Click the Opera menu
  2. Select History
  3. Click Clear Browsing Data
  4. From the “Obliterate the following items drop down menu, select the period of time for which you wish to clear cached information
  5. In the Clear Browsing Data panel, select:
    • Browsing history
    • Download history
    • Delete cookies and other site data
    • Empty the cache
  6. Click Clear browsing data
  7. Exit all browser windows and re-open the browser

Safari 8 (iOS)

  1. From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  2. Select the Privacy tab
  3. Click Remove All Website Data
  4. Click Remove Now
  5. Exit all browser windows and re-open the browser

Safari 5 (Windows)

  1. Click on the Settings icon
  2. Select Reset Safari
  3. Check off:
    • Clear history
    • Empty the cache
    • Remove all cookies
  4. Click Reset
  5. Exit all browser windows and re-open the browser
