How to Search: the process

To search for information, there are two important things to do before you start:

  1. determine what areas are likely to cover the information you need
  2. determine possible keywords you can use for your search

Here's an example:

  • Topic - State funding of arterial roadways
  • Areas - Engineering, Political Science, Government
  • Possible Keywords - capital project, highway statistics, funding, revenue sources, investments
  • Types of resources - Newspapers, Magazines, Trade Journals, Peer-reviewed or Academic articles

Where to Search for Resources

Choose tools that cover the Areas you have identified to search for resources. (Tip: Ask a librarian if you are not sure where to find resources!)
